In the 8th century, Nanao became the capital of Noto province, which was ruled by Lord Hatakeyama. Subsequently, Nanao flourished under the rule of the Hakakeyama clan as the capital. This course is a short tour for learning about the history and culture of Nanao. It includes Nanao Museum, which features paintings by Tohaku Hasegawa, a famous painter of the late 16th century.
Strolling around Nanao City area
Take community buses to visit sightseeing spots in Nanao, and spend two relaxing days strolling around the town.
The south gate of Kokubunji Temple, which was constructed during the Heian period, has been restored. You can see displays of ancient copper wado-kaisho coins, earthenware, roof tiles, etc. in the exhibition hall.
Arms, armor and writings of Lord Hatakeyama are exhibited here. Exhibits of items such as lacquerware and mirror die casts that were used in the medieval period speak of the prosperity of the city at that time.
Hike to the top of the mountain. You will have a commanding view of the city and Notojima Island from the observation deck in the castle ruins. The splendid view will alleviate your fatigue.
This 200-year-old building adjacent to Nanao Castle Museum was once the residence of the village headman. The garden surrounded by Japanese cedar trees is splendid.
